Vanlife diaries Finding freedom on the open road

Kathleen Morton, 1986-

Book - 2019

A photography book celebrating the nomadic lifestyle and community of vanlife through interviews, essential advice for living on the road, and more than 200 photos of tiny rolling homes. Inspired by the blog and Instagram account, Vanlife Diaries is an inspiring and detailed look into the world of the rolling homes built and occupied by a new generation of modern nomads: a range of professionals and creatives who have ditched conventional houses for the freedom of the road and the beauty of the outdoors. More than 200 photographs feature the vanlifers, their pets, and their converted vans and buses--VWs, Sprinters, Toyotas, and more--with the interiors uniquely customized and decorated for their work and hobbies, as well as the stunning na...tural locations that are the movement's inspiration. Interviews and narrative captions share the stories of these nomads and how they decided to pursue vanlife, and provide practical tips and inspiration for downsizing, finding and converting your vehicle, and working and living on the road. --

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

In this lively photographic narrative, Australian authors Morton, Dustow, and Melrose-all Vanlife Diaries bloggers-take readers into the world of vanlifers, those who travel across countries in their vans. The authors argue that vanlife is an increasingly popular back-to-the-land movement and offer plenty of insight into the practicalities of the lifestyle, such as showering (hot springs, truck stops, and portable solar showers), maintaining an income (work remotely or consider seasonal work; one couple capitalized on their experience and now renovates Airstreams for other vanlifers), and traveling with pets. Along the way, they profile vagabonds such as American Genevieve Jahn, who was fired from her corporate marketing job for missing too much work, then rehired as a remote worker with more pay. Readers will be drawn in with page after page of images of outfitted Vanagons, Sprinters, and commercial vans; jaw-dropping landscapes and the laid-back travelers making the most of the eye-popping scenery; and sunrises viewed from the bed in one's camper. Even if readers never make the leap into cross-country camping, they're sure to enjoy the inviting snapshots shared here. (Apr.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
