Book - 2019

Have you ever ridden a bike? Do you lock your door? When it is hot out, do you enjoy the cool inside due to air conditioning? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you have used a product or system designed and developed by a mechanical engineer. Everywhere around you, you encounter the work of mechanical engineers-- any product or system you use that contains moving parts, is likely to have begun with a mechanical engineer, or a team of engineers including a mechanical engineer, as they designed the product and developed the process for producing it. With constant advancement of new products and machinery used to create such products, mechanical engineers are at the forefront of technological changes. They design, analyze and... manufacture systems and products, and develop processes used to make products that are a part of people's lives. Innovation and technology create exciting possibilities for the mechanical engineering field and those who work in the field--

Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up-A handy reference for teens thinking of engineering as a possible career choice. Each volume describes a particular type of engineering, with helpful infographics that show details such as median pay, minimum educational requirements, and future job outlook. The chapters cover what the titular engineer does, how to become one, what skills and qualities are needed, what the work is like, opportunities for advancement, the future of the field, and an interview with someone from the field. Most individuals shown are white males. The "Find Out More" section in each title offers addresses and websites of organizations to contact for information, along with a description of each organization's purpose. VERDICT A helpful, though not very inclusive, look at career choices for high schoolers. © Copyright 2018. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
