Review by Booklist Review

Ash is like no other drug on the streets of NOLA. Made from the bones of the dead, the drug causes users to experience a moment in the life of the deceased person, allowing them to witness all that person's feelings and experiences before they died. The Winters family has complete control of the supply for now, but interest in the drug may tear what's left of the family apart. What's particularly amazing about this first volume is simply how much is packed into it. In only four chapters, the individual family members are well fleshed out, with small reveals along the way to hint at other family history to come, while the story arcs involving conflicts with a rival drug cartel and crooked cops are quickly introduced, then tightly wrapped up by the end. Cullen's furious momentum is sure to grab attention and doesn't let go till the bloody end. Scharf and Guimaráes expertly shift the visual tone from gritty drama to psychedelic horror, seamlessly transitioning between the two in this twisted thriller.--Peter Blenski Copyright 2019 Booklist
