Review by Booklist Review

Veterinarian and San Diego Humane Society President Weitzman wants readers to treat this guide to responsible pet ownership as a ""24-hour-on-call vet"": a first reference for ""common health, behavior and training issues"" that also lets pet owners know when to seek further help. He organizes his 37 chapters, which begin with considerations for adoption and end with end-of-life care, into six parts: general pet happiness and ownership; everyday health and nutrition; behavior; emergencies; more-serious health issues; and aging. For the most part, Weitzman tailors his topic for dogs, cats, and other small or exotic pets (a few chapters are dogs-only or cats-only). Tons of photos (there's an adorable animal on nearly every page), topical pop-outs, and ""Ask Dr. Gary"" sidebars enrich the appeal, along with the occasional troubleshooting lists, covering topics such as what to do when a pet goes missing. Weitzman shares his warmhearted yet firm professional advice in a conversational, often humorous tone. Appendixes include resources and drug information. ""Complete"" doesn't seem hyperbolic here; Weitzman's compassionate, nose-to-tail advice for happy, healthy pets will find an appreciative audience.--Annie Bostrom Copyright 2019 Booklist
