A donkey passes through a series of owners-some kind, some abusive-before succumbing to its foreseeable fate in Balthazar (1966), Bresson's (Pickpocket) affecting tale about way more than a beast of burden. Malle made an auspicious feature-film debut with the noir-ish Elevator (1958), a thriller about a guy who murders his boss to carry on an affair with the man's eye--catching wife (Jeanne Moreau). Schrader (American Gigolo) stylistically chronicles Japanese novelist (Yukio) Mishima (1985) through re-creating his works to a driving Philip Glass score. Bergman's Virgin (1960) tells a medieval revenge story whereby the rapist-killers of an innocent farm girl unwittingly seek refuge with the victim's father (Max von Sydow). VERDICT This quartet of esteemed Criterion catalog titles benefit from recent Blu-ray upgrades superior to their decade-plus-old DVDs, making the case for inclusion in appropriate collections.-Jeff T.
