Avoiding her unbalanced brother, who is currently king of her country, and in search of an antidote for her sweetheart's curse, Wilhelmina (Wil) and her small band of friends and allies navigate perilous journeys across land and sea. At best, Wil and Loom may be able to ally their countries for a lasting peace; at worst, Wil may lose everyone she loves. Adventure and action are the backbone of this fantasy, although the relationship angle is not neglected. The sequel to The Glass Spare (2017) further develops the family history that resulted in Wil's curse and provides a look at the complicated relationships in life, whether with lovers, friends, siblings, or parents. This is a diverse world, with myriad colors and preferences represented, and DeStefano is a masterful storyteller. Give this to fans of Claire LeGrand's Empirium trilogy, Andrew Shvarts' Bastards novels, or Tricia Levenseller's Daughter of the Pirate King books.--Cindy Welch Copyright 2019 Booklist
