The new edition als...o adds an extensive annotated list of editorial tools and references and includes a bit of light entertainment for language lovers, such as a brief history of punctuation marks that didn't make the grade, the strange case of razbliuto, and a few Easter eggs awaiting discovery by keen-eyed readers. The fourth edition features updates reflecting the transformation of editorial roles in today's publishing environment, new applications, processes, and protocols for on-screen editing major changes in editorial resources, such as online dictionaries and language corpora, new grammar and usage authorities, online editorial communities, and web-based research tools. Review by Choice Review

In this fourth edition of the late Amy Einsohn's seminal work (first published in 2000), Schwartz expands and updates earlier versions to explain and guide the work of copyeditors in the diverse world of 21st-century publishing. The bulk of this meticulous, detailed new edition is devoted to editorial style--mechanical editing and correction of mistakes and inconsistencies--and language editing or issues related to grammar, usage, organization, legal concerns, and more. Classic copyediting skills such as hand marking are included, but special attention is given to onscreen copyediting and the use of technology and digital tools. Variations in the recommendations of other style guides are explained, and problems not covered elsewhere are also addressed. Schwartz (formerly, managing editor of the University of California Press) includes an overview of the role of the copyeditor, and she suggests additional reading, useful resources, and places to look for further information. Absolutely required for students in publishing programs, the volume will also be valuable for those working with copyeditors and those interested in becoming freelance editors. Includes a glossary, notes, and copious references. Summing Up: Essential. Upper-division undergraduates, researchers, faculty, and professionals. --Melissa Anderson, Southern Oregon University
