The memory of you

Jamie Beck

Book - 2018

"Steffi Lockwood has survived more than most. Now left with puzzling memory lapses following an assault, she returns to her coastal Connecticut hometown to rebuild her life the best way she knows how: with her hands. But starting a remodeling business with one longtime friend puts her in the middle of a rift with another. Worse, being hired by her ex-boyfriend's mother forces her to confront old regrets. Public defender Ryan Quinn wasn't shocked when his wife left him, but he was floored when she abandoned their daughter. With his finances up in the air, the newly single dad returns to his childhood home in Sanctuary Sound. The last person he expects, or wants, to see working on his family house is Steffi Lockwood--his first ...love who shattered his heart. Although Steffi and Ryan are different people now, dormant feelings rekindle. But when Ryan's concern for Steffi's mental health prompts him to dig into her past for answers, will what he learns bring them together or tear them apart for good?"--Amazon.com.

Steffi Lockwood returns home to Sanctuary Sound, her coastal Connecticut hometown, after a brutal attack has left her with lingering memory blackouts. She and her best friend, Claire, have launched a home remodeling business, and their new client is the mother of Steffi's first boyfriend, Ryan. He's recently separated and back home, too, with his young daughter. Steffi broke Ryan's heart when they were in college, leading him to his ill-fated marriage. At first, he's reticent, but as they both discover how they've changed, their old feelings rekindle. Still, until Steffi confronts the effects of her trauma, she can't be truly intimate with Ryan again. This is the first in a planned series, Sanctuary Sound, by popular romancer Beck, who deepens a typical story about first loves reuniting by exploring the aftermath of a violent act. Readers will root for an ending that repairs this couple's past hurt.--Aleksandra Walker Copyright 2018 Booklist

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

In this dramatic first Sanctuary Sound contemporary, Beck (the Sterling Canyon series) reunites former lovers and reignites lingering emotions. Thirty-something Stefanie Lockwood's new business as a home remodeler brings her back to the sleepy Connecticut coastal town of Sanctuary Sound a decade after she dumped her high school sweetheart, Ryan Quinn. Stefanie and Ryan's new chance at love is threatened by Stefanie's flashbacks to a violent mugging in her college town of Hartford three months earlier. In addition, Ryan's eight-year-old daughter keeps trying to get him back together with his ex-wife. Beck adds further conflict by introducing two feuding friends of Stefanie's, while Ryan's wise mother provides stability that balances the turmoil in everyone's lives. Beck's portrayals of divorce and trauma are keen, and once the story slows down from its initial rapid pace and focuses on Ryan and Stefanie, readers will be caught up in their journey toward healing and romance.
