Review by Booklist Review

Inspired by her own problems with bloat, tiredness, and sugar cravings, certified health-coach Wise investigated her maladies and now shares her findings about how the stomach and intestines are home to millions of microbes, good and bad, and how what we eat determines which microbes survive. Admitting to her own craving for the sweet stuff, the author sets out to locate hidden sugars, substitute healthier options, and regain control of her body. It's not only complex carbohydrates that are the culprits. Wise also warns against gluten and dairy (low-fat versions are often the worst) and recommends fermented foods, such as organic yogurt and sauerkraut. Because stress and the resulting floods of cortisol also affect the digestive tract, the author encourages sufferers to turn to mindfulness and meditation instead of cookies for relief. Though some of the research she shares is technical, Wise connects it to real-life examples and ends each chapter with a short list of Takeaways, which reinforce key concepts. With the rise of autoimmune diseases and diabetes, this informative book will find a ready audience.--Candace Smith Copyright 2018 Booklist
