Despite all of our modern technology, there are still subjects that defy science. The titles in the Enduring Mysteries series highlight some of these areas. In each case, the author traces the history and myths surrounding the unexplained phenomenon, how scientists have worked (and continue to work) to try to solve the mystery, and how it has been depicted in literature and popular media. In the process, Karst blends the right amount of reality, skepticism, and what-if scenarios. The Great Sphinx presents numerous theories on how and when this man-made wonder was built, its purpose, and what (or who) it represents. A mix of real photographs and computer-enhanced illustrations lend an appropriate eeriness to this high-interest series.--Angela Leeper Copyright 2018 Booklist

Karst digs into the history of--and the many mysteries surrounding--Egypt's Great Sphinx with a linear narrative that will engage upper-elementary and middle-school readers; it begins with speculation about the ancient wonder's construction and meaning and moves through history to modern-day tourism and preservation efforts. Abundant glossy photographs break up the text. Websites. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2019. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
