When monsters come! When danger knocks! / When evil runs amok! / We need ourselves a chicken, now we need our Thundercluck! Spun up from a 2016 film short, this rousing adventure introduces a new hero to the world. Born of Thor's favorite hen, with the power to call down lightning, Thundercluck was raised in secret on a farm in Midgard and now returns to Asgard in triumph only to join beloved young Valkyrie Brunhilde in a sprint through the Norse worlds when Thor is kidnapped by evil chef Gorman Bones. Battling monsters (lots of monsters) and learning to conquer his fears as he goes, the canny cockerel faces his foe at last in the volcano-fired Kitchen of Destiny, where he attempts to rescue Thor, save Valhalla, and escape becoming the main ingredient in a cauldron of Chicken Soup for the Wretched Soul. Along with his manga-eyed, fiercely cute companion, this plucky pullet strikes suitably heroic poses in the blocky, comical illustrations. What will readers think of his epic debut? Feathers-and humor-fly freely in this series launch, a farce lightly based on Norse mythology. Thundercluck is a chick with magical powers. She hatched from an egg that was laid by Thor's treasured hen, Hennda, who was struck by a lightning bolt summoned by the god during a heated argument with his chef, Bones, who had long sought to dine on the chicken. Bones vanishes, but a seer, Saga, portends his return in one of her jauntily rhymed predictions and reveals that the villain is now craving Thundercluck. A young Valkyrie, Brunhilde, takes the chick under her wing and is heartbroken when the gods whisk her friend off to Earth for protection. Brunhilde is eventually sent to fetch him, and the two (sporting matching horned helmets) take a comedic whirlwind tour of the nine realms on a quest to retrieve Thundercluck's lost powers and best the nefarious chef. Tillery dishes out bountiful allusions and wordplay both smart and silly ("It's a chicken wrap," Brunhilde quips when Thor disguises Thundercluck with his cape), and his note that the novel began as an animated short does not surprise, given its chirpy dialogue, rat-a-tat action, and spry illustrations. Review by Kirkus Book Review

A semidivine chicken and his Valkyrie friend save Asgard from a nefarious culinary professional in this illustrated middle-grade novel. The story opens as a disgruntled chef of Asgard accidentally helps Thor imbue his beloved chicken, Hennda, with the power of the gods. The ancient Norse goddess of prophecy foresees (in flawless rhyme) that Thundercluck, the offspring of Hennda and a thunderbolt, will later be the one to save them all from the cook after his descent to the underworld. After a few years spent magicless and safe with two old farmers, Thundercluck reunites with both his powers and his chickhood friend, the doughty Valkyrie Brunhilde, and together the two travel across the Realms to vanquish the evil Under-Cook once and for all. It's a ridiculous plot, delivered with an impeccably serious tone, where every joke, from evil apple pie to a recipe for Chicken Soup for the Wretched Soul, is delivered deadpan and contrasts with suspensefully high stakes. Carefully worded sentences often integrate both rhythm and clarity, making this an ideal adventure for more reluctant readers. The valiant chicken thinks coherently to himself, but his entire dialogue consists of artfully timed "Ba-bwak?"s and "Ba-GURRRK"s, adding another layer of hilarity to an already comical story. Spot illustrations throughout add to the characterization, imbuing Thundercluck especially with a singular personality and depicting most humans and humanoids with paper-white skin.An absurd story executed with admirable gravity and skill.
