Review by Booklist Review

As this informational picture book focuses on the historical significance of lighthouses and their enduring legacy, it's easy to see how these beacons of light (and sound on foggy nights!) continue to fascinate. This Russian import with occasional British English spellings uses a question-and-answer format in double-page spreads. Beginning with lighthouse basics, such as their purpose and parts of a lighthouse station, it follows with detailed information about how lighthouse lamps use optic lenses developed by French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel. Illustrated with delightful, retro-style artwork in primary colors, which illuminates reds and yellows against blue skies and waters, it also explains how to tell lighthouses apart, what civilizations used before lighthouses, how lighthouses have been built, and the role of a lighthouse keeper. In most cases, the author describes both early lighthouse practices and how they differ today and includes amazing examples from around the world. The final section lets children put STEM to work as they design their own lighthouse with guided prompts. Pair with Sophie Blackall's Hello Lighthouse (2018) for another look inside.--Angela Leeper Copyright 2018 Booklist
