Review by Booklist Review
This colorful and fact-filled book tells readers all about oceans and the amazing animals found there, from deep-sea creatures to surface-dwelling mammals. It describes, too, the ocean's motion and the effect that weather (El Niño, monsoons, climate change) can have. Scientific advances have led to the exploration of the deepest ocean depths with its varied geography (underwater mountains, coral islands), and they're teeming with a variety of sea life. In addition to what's under the sea, coastal regions (lagoons, mangroves, caves) are explored as well, and readers will learn what it's like to live by, on, and from the sea (fishing, shipping cargo, oil rigs). Suggestions for habitat restoration, saving the ocean, and protecting marine areas are included, while a noted marine ecologist and an oceanographer offer advice to kids who want to study the ocean. More than 350 gorgeous color photos, diagrams, and illustrations pop on brightly colored pages, complete with contrasting fonts, a glossary, an index, and additional resources. Great for browsing or as a supplementary resource for research projects.--Rawlins, Sharon Copyright 2017 Booklist

Gr 4-7-With more than 350 vibrant photographs, this is a visually enticing look at the undersea world. Engaging "Bet You Didn't Know" fact boxes enhance each of the seven chapters. Chapter one provides size overview and maps of the locations while also highlighting the species unique to each of the four oceans. Also detailed are the properties of oceans, with a spread for the various layers, from sunlit to abyss. Focusing on aquatic life, the second chapter includes a concise food web. Students will learn relevant information about sharks, mollusks, clams, coral, and more (common and scientific name, size, diet, habitat, and range). Other sections examine waves, currents, and tides; weather phenomena such as El Niño and monsoons; the seafloor; and human influence (fishing, the importance of protecting the sea). Firsthand accounts from experts (e.g., marine ecologists and oceanographers) enliven the work. The book concludes with a three-page glossary with more than 100 terms. VERDICT The crisp images will lure in browsers, and the user-friendly layout will hold the interest of those seeking report fodder.-Beth McGuire, Hempfield Area School District, Greensburg, PA © Copyright 2017.
