The good luck charm

Helena Hunting

Book - 2018

"Lilah isn't sure what hurt worse: the day Ethan left her to focus on his hockey career or the day he came back eight years later. He might think they can pick up just where they left off, but she's no longer that same girl and never wants to be again. Ethan wants his glory days back. And that includes having Lilah by his side. With her, he was magic. They were magic. All he has to do is make her see that. Just when Lilah might finally be ready to let Ethan in, though, she finds out their reunion might have nothing to do with love and everything to do with improving his game. But Ethan's already lost her once, and even if it costs him his career, he'll do anything to keep from losing her again"--

Lilah didn't think her day could get worse until she reaches the end of her nursing shift and discovers the man she considers to be her de facto father, Martin Kase, has been admitted after suffering a stroke. Intent on offering any support she can to Martin and his wife, Jeannie, Lilah arrives in Martin's hospital room only to discover one of their sons has gotten there first. Of course, it would have to be Ethan, Lilah's ex-boyfriend and once best friend, who, eight years ago, dumped her before heading off to L.A. to launch his NHL career. Now that he is back in Minnesota, Ethan would like nothing better than to pick up where things left off with Lilah. But she is equally convinced that she should do everything she can to block any attempt by Ethan to take another shot at her heart. Writing with a deliciously sharp humor, Hunting shoots and scores in this exceptionally entertaining contemporary romance, whose easily relatable characters and plethora of red-hot love scenes will please fans of Rachel Gibson and Deidre Martin.--John Charles Copyright 2018 Booklist

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Hunting (Getting Down) sparkles in this well-plotted contemporary about a struggling and superstitious hockey player, his devastated ex-lover, and the hope and joy of second chances. Just after NHL player Ethan Kase is traded from Chicago to his home state of Minnesota, his cantankerous father has a stroke-and Ethan comes face-to-face with his biggest regret: Delilah Jane, the childhood sweetheart he abandoned eight years earlier. Now a nurse in their hometown of Forest Lake, Lilah sees Ethan's father being admitted to the hospital and knows that Ethan's arrival won't be far behind. Ethan knows that breaking up with Lilah was the biggest mistake he ever made, but he begins trying to woo her back. But having been abandoned first by her father and then by Ethan, Lilah's not sure she wants to try again-especially when she finds out Ethan may just see her as a good luck charm. Hunting imbues her characters, especially Lilah, with quick wit and enjoyable depth, and the curveball she throws into the plot at the end is truly surprising, yet believable. Lively supporting characters, including Lilah's sassy sister, Carmen, add fun to the mix. Readers will hope for a return to Forest Lake. Agent: Kimberly Brower, Brower Literary & Management.
