Scotland's elusive Nessie haunts the pages of this title in the speculative Are They Real? series. Opening with a grainy, green-tinged photo of Loch Ness, Murray relays a purported sighting of the monster. Murray goes on to describe what Nessie might look like (accompanied by several plesiosaur-like renderings) and how scientists have yet to find proof she exists. Suggestions are offered of Nessie alternatives, such as logs or an eel, but these should have been more clearly marked as arguments against the monster theory. An early hoax and example of a lake-monster tale add allure to an already high-interest topic. A closing activity prompts readers to create their own stories about Nessie. Attractively designed, with minimal text and abundant large-scale photo and digital illustrations, this book will suck young kids down to the murky depths.--Smith, Julia Copyright 2017 Booklist

Gr 1-3-An overview of the topic of supernatural sightings. The series asks, "Are they real?," providing emerging readers with an opportunity to navigate informational texts and draw their own conclusions. Each book pairs large, glossy photographs with short sentences to highlight scientific investigations and make text-to-reader connections. Each volume ends with an activity to try at home. VERDICT Excellent for individual interests or small reading groups, especially as an introduction to nonfiction features. © Copyright 2017.
