PreS-In these two new installments in the series, creators Rodriguez and Stein bring to the hands of babies and toddlers the images of two iconic Latinx and Latin American stars: Mexican American singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez and Mexican actor Mario Moreno "Cantinflas." The unique format; vibrant colors; and use of space, text, and illustrations make these successful introductions to concepts, images, and language. In Cantinflas, the subject travels by train, boat, air balloon, scooter, bus, and camel through different countries around the world. Images of animals, recognizable landmarks, country map, and the English/Spanish word for the country are captured on each page. More words in English/Spanish and a facts about Cantinflas's life and work would have enhanced this cute and accessible board book. In The Life of Selena/La vida de Selena, contrary to other books in the series, sentences include specific words in larger font. From her childhood to her passions and legacy and through short and simple text, the volume provides a well-crafted glimpse into the singer's life and work. Both titles enhance the limited options of authentic Latinx and bilingual board books, and provide exposure and visibility to historic entertainers and artists from Latinx communities. -VERDICT Must-have selections for board book shelves.-Sujei Lugo, Boston Public Library © Copyright 2018.
