Review by Library Journal Review

Writer/director Shelton's classic 1988 ode to minor league baseball gets the bonus-packed, digitally restored treatment from Criterion, giving both old fans and newbies a good reason to revisit or experience for the first time this deservedly well-loved romantic comedy. Hollywood heavyweight Kevin Costner and then newcomer Tim Robbins star as teammates on the Durham Bulls, the former an over-the-hill ex-major league catcher clinging to a professional career who tries to mentor the latter, a hotheaded young pitching phenom itching for a shot at the bigs. The ballplayers compete for the attention of Susan Sarandon's wise and wily "baseball groupie" character, who turns the baseball diamond into a love triangle. This 30th-anniversary edition boasts a wealth of bonus content, highlighted by a behind-the-scenes featurette, an insightful new interview with Shelton, and, best of all, amusing audio commentary by Costner, Robbins, and Shelton. -VERDICT This impressive new presentation of a well-aged exemplar is highly recommended not only to baseball and romance fans but to all mature viewers who appreciate smartly written, well-acted comedies.-Douglas King, Univ. of South Carolina Lib., Columbia © Copyright 2018.
