PreS-Gr 1-This addition to the series for emerging readers follows the steps of a young boy as he confidently prepares and participates in field day-lacing up new sneakers, eating breakfast, waiting to be picked for a team, running a relay race, and cheering for his teammates. The short sentences are enhanced with simple illustrations. Events covered are a relay race, a large shape puzzle to solve, a three-legged race, a water-balloon toss, and an obstacle course. Each paragraph emphasizes cooperation, patience, and a positive team spirit: "We work together. We finish the puzzle. We are a strong team." VERDICT Extolling the benefits of thoughtful cooperation, communication, and working to one's strengths, this book combines attractive and brightly painted cartoon art and simple sentences with a positive message of self-determination and team-building. In Brave, a girl conquers her (small) fears on a family beach vacation. In Strong, a boy takes the lead during his school's field day events. Both easy-reader stories, with their "Positive Power" messages and somewhat static digitally-colored pencil illustrations, are reassuring if a little bland.
