Four funerals and maybe a wedding

Rhys Bowen

Book - 2018

"In the days leading up to her wedding to Darcy O'Mara, Lady Georgiana Rannoch takes on the responsibilities of a grand estate, but proving she can run a household just may be the death of her in the new Royal Spyness Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service. If only Darcy and I had eloped! What I thought would be a simple wedding has been transformed into a grand affair, thanks to the attendance of the queen, who has offere...d up the princesses as bridesmaids. Silly me! I thought that withdrawing from the royal line of succession would simplify my life. But before Darcy and I tie the knot in front of queen and country, we have to find a place to live as man and wife... House hunting turns out to be a pretty grim affair. Just as we start to lose hope, my globetrotting godfather offers us his fully staffed country estate. Mistress of Eynsleigh I shall be! With Darcy off in parts unknown, I head to Eynsleigh alone, only to have my hopes dashed. The grounds are in disarray and the small staff is suspiciously incompetent. Not to mention the gas tap leak in my bedroom, which I can only imagine was an attempt on my life. Something rotten is afoot--and bringing the place up to snuff may put me six feet under before I even get a chance to walk down the aisle.."--

Star amateur sleuth of the 1930s-set "Royal Spyness Mystery" series, Lady Georgiana Rannoch is getting ready to walk down the aisle and is offered her godfather's fully staffed country estate as a home. Whether channeling her great-grandmother Queen Victoria or exclaiming "golly" when faced with a quandary, Lady Georgiana Rannough rises above her circumstances like a meringue. In her 12th adventure (after On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service), the still penniless aristocrat is planning her wedding to the dashing but equally impoverished Darcy O'Mara. Fortunately, friends and family are helping out with the preparations. Georgina is offered a staffed country estate to make her new home by her globe-trotting former stepfather only to find the faithful retainers of her youth have been replaced by unlikely and uncooperative servants—one of whom even turned on the gas tap in her bedroom. Was this an accident or an attempt on her life? Georgina senses trouble is afoot and investigates. VERDICT Those who cannot get enough of royal weddings will be charmed, as will Anglophiles, and anyone who loves a solid mystery. Fans of the genre will savor this gentle, humorous read. Review by Publishers Weekly Reviews

Bestseller Bowen's disappointing 12th Royal Spyness mystery (after 2017's On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service) lacks her usual charm. Lady Georgiana Rannoch, a distant—and impoverished—relative of the British royal family, is a month away from her July 1935 wedding to Darcy O'Mara. As she juggles logistical details, including the guest list and her attire, not to mention her insecurities about Darcy's faithfulness, her godfather, Sir Hubert Anstruther, offers her a welcome gift: his Sussex country estate, Eynsleigh, as her home. But on arrival at Eynsleigh, she finds a surly staff, neglected grounds, and indications that the household accounts have been faked. While she manages to adopt the persona of a forceful lady of the manor, her efforts to whip things into shape are impeded by her suspicions that the previous butler's fatal fall down the stairs was no accident—and that her own life is in peril. The mystery element predominates, and fans will miss Georgie's hilariously inept maid, Queenie, who's offstage for the first half of the book. Agent: Meg Ruley, Jane Rotrosen Agency. (Aug.)
