The path between us An Enneagram journey to healthy relationships

Suzanne Stabile

Book - 2018

"Most of us have no idea that others don't see as we see, nor do they process their experiences in the same way we do. And that fact is especially crucial in relationships, whether with intimate partners, friends, or in our professional lives. A person whose go-to stance in life relies on feeling and another whose orientation is toward thinking or acting will respond completely differently to everything from a simple request in an email to a life crisis. Understanding the motivations and dynamics of these different personality types can be the key that unlocks sometimes mystifying behavior in others--and in ourselves. Suzanne Stabile's new book on the nine Enneagram types and how they behave and experience relationships wil...l guide readers into deeper insights about themselves, their types, and others' personalities so that they can have healthier, more life-giving relationships"--Page 4 of cover.

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Stabile follows The Road Back to You (cowritten with Ian Cron) with this delightful relationship guide based on the Enneagram, an ancient Christian spiritual personality typology. Each of the nine personality types of the Enneagram has idiosyncrasies, strengths, and weaknesses; responds differently to stresses; and flourishes differently when it matures. Stabile's sketches are intended to help readers understand each type's quirks and preferences. For Stabile, using the Enneagram to understand and respond to behavior will lead to patient insight rather than snap judgment: "Looking through the lens of the Enneagram makes it possible to better understand ourselves and others, increase our acceptance and compassion, and navigate the paths between us." Stabile marshals a lot of information, but her anecdotes and generalizations are never too abstract. "It is harder for a Nine to know who they are in a relationship than any other number," she writes. "They seem to arrive on the planet with a desire to be unaffected by life." She also helpfully uses the same subheadings ("the world of," "stress and security," "limitations," and "the path together") to organize content in each section. This concise book will be useful to Enneagram students wanting to go deeper and has application for organization managers interested in personality typologies. (Apr.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. Review by Library Journal Review

Taking a particularly novel approach to relationships, Stabile (The Road Back to You) employs enneagrams to help readers interpret individual ways of experiencing the world. Being familiar with a person's enneagram number (similar to a relationship style or Myers-Briggs indicator) and stance (aggressive, dependent, or withdrawing), one can relate to others more easily. Stabile explores each number in depth and how people with varying basic drives can work together in harmony and have compassion for one another. -VERDICT A fascinating view into different ways of being. © Copyright 2018.
