How did I not see this coming? A new manager's guide to avoiding total disaster

Katy Tynan

Book - 2018

In How Did I Not See This Coming?, Tynan tells the fictional story of Julie, a onetime star producer, to illustrate how a new manager can successfully make the shift from a role without leadership responsibilities to one with them. Along the way, Tynan offers the five basic truths about management--starting with recognizing team values and strengths--truths that can be learned by anyone. You, too, can be the manager everyone's talking about--in a good way--because you're the one who figured it out.

Review by Booklist Review

Every first-time manager is overwhelmed by the responsibilities, ambiguities, and unknowns surrounding the new role as well as by the absolute avalanche of books teaching the how-tos of managing. Where to go? Start simply, with Tynan's (Free Agent, 2015; Survive Your Promotion, 2010) sixth book. Like other authors, she creates a persona, Julie Long, no doubt loosely based in her own experiences, who learns her way via conversations with a coach, a construction supervisor, an ex-boss, and two more professionals. Each story delivers one truth, from define your value and measure everything against that to without trust, there is no team, adding up to a handful of tenets that would serve any new leader well. Though none of this is rocket science, Tynan's quick-read narrative and easy-to-understand examples make for a good primer or refresher. Tynan appends a list of her favorite management books.--Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2018 Booklist
