A history of children's books in 100 books

Roderick Cave

Book - 2017

While the modern children's book, intended specifically for the enjoyment of children, did not emerge until 18th-century Europe, its roots span centuries and continents: children's literature began with fables, myths and folk tales from the oral tradition. A History of the Children's Book in 100 Books takes a global perspective and traces the development of the genre from ancient stories such as Aesop's Fables and the Indian Panchatantra, through the Puritan primers of the 17th century, to the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, to the highly collectable Ladybird books of the 20th century, and up to modern classics and bestsellers such as the Harry Potter series. Illustrations have often been key components of children...39;s stories, visualizing fantastic scenes and making them instantly recognizable. Original artwork from iconic illustrators such as Arthur Rackham, Walter Crane and John Tenniel is beautifully reproduced throughout.

Review by Choice Review

Roderick Cave, print historian and rare book librarian, and Sara Ayad, art historian and researcher--authors of The History of the Book in 100 Books (CH, Mar'15, 52-3388)--have teamed up to produce another excellent history of books. Here they present books to read to, or to be read by, children; most of the books are from the US and Great Britain, but the authors include books from other places then translated into English. Each of these 100 books is described in detail, and the authors reference many other books in the descriptions. Color-coded sections introduce each chapter, providing a basic history of children's books for that time period or topic theme. Among the 11 sections are "Tales of Tails: Animal Stories for Children" and "The War Years and Beyond." The explanations of book history are essential to understanding the significance of the selected works and how they fit into the history of children's books. The 100 selected books are cross-referenced throughout. Delightful illustrations, many of them in color, are included. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers. --LadyJane Hickey, Austin College

Print historian Cave and picture researcher Ayad have created an engrossing follow-up to The History of the Book in 100 Books (2014). Although the focus is on Britain and the former British Empire, the authors present a global history of children's literature, tracing from oral traditions and pre-literacy to primers and chapbooks to fairy tales and the Harry Potter novels. Also addressed is the topic of books as technology. Eachof the 100 books is highlighted on a double-page spread, and many additional authors and titles are mentioned. The book concludes with a bibliography of websites, books, and articles, in addition to a glossary and an index. With an abundance of attractive color photographs and engrossing text, this highly browsable book will appeal to both students and enthusiasts of children's literature.--Ostergard, Maren Copyright 2018 Booklist
