DVD - 2017

The story explores the life and work of one of the most loved, influential, and well-known artists, Johannes Vermeer. Images from his paintings have become part of our collective imagination and are instantly recognizable. In the new feature documentary, French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Cottet adopts an imaginative and sensitive approach to his subject, focusing on not only his work, but also his family life, including his conversion to Catholicism.

Review by Booklist Reviews

Steve Martin narrates this beautifully rendered biography of Johannes Vermeer (1632–75), the Dutch master whose works faded into oblivion for 200 years. Why did the artist's reputation vanish, and why are art lovers so passionate about his works (only 37 known canvases exist) are among the posed questions in this impressive documentary. Vermeer grew up in Delft, married, converted to Catholicism, and fathered 11 children who survived, placing a financial burden on the family. His early paintings were mythological in design, and later works often featured women who appear graceful. Close-ups of Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Lacemaker, A Girl Asleep, Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window, and others are examined with thoughtful descriptions of themes, styles, symbolism, and more. Realistic dramatizations and footage inside art museums add vitality to this must-see program for lovers of fine art. Includes a bonus interview with Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., a curator at the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C. Copyright 2018 Booklist Reviews.
