Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Published in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, this atlas highlights more than 600 animals and their habitats. An overview of each of the Earth's continents is followed by more targeted explorations of the habitats within; the section on South America delves into the Amazon rainforest, Andean mountains, pampas, and less-frequently discussed regions such as the Pantanal wetlands, Brazilian Cerrado (grasslands), and the Cordillera Blanca, a tropical mountain range. Digitally illustrated icons of various animals appear throughout on maps and snapshot-style photographs and photomontages present the creatures in eye-catching detail, bolstered by brief, informative captions. The ocean's many denizens also get their due, and a quiz and glossary round out a volume that offers a real sense of the enormous variety of habitats and species on Earth. Ages 6-8.
