Review by Booklist Review

The human body is a kind of machine, and all of the systems, tools, and wiring it takes to keep it going are explored and celebrated here. Information is broken down into the body systems, and the text is clear and comprehensible without sacrificing facts. Done in true DK style, the book has plenty of colorful sidebars to provide further detail, and the layout makes the eye jump around the page. Throughout it all, the notion of the body as a machine is reiterated in the explanations of its part, which will be a helpful analogy for many readers. Gildersleeve's cut-paper collage illustrations are detailed enough to be accurate but simple enough that kids won't get lost in the minutiae. Bright colors highlight different features of the organ or body system, and illustrations are large enough to be shared in a group or classroom setting. This will appeal to nonfiction readers, reluctant readers, and those who are just curious about everything it takes to keep a human body up and running.--Linsenmeyer, Erin Copyright 2017 Booklist

Gr 3-5-Human body systems get the DK treatment in this effective visual guide. Each spread offers quick facts and details about different anatomical mechanisms. Captioned illustrations dominate the pages, with photos scattered throughout. Microscopic views of cells, glands, bacteria, viruses, and other body components are also included. Twelve body systems are covered. The brain and nervous system get the most attention, while information on reproductive parts and reproduction is minimal and includes only strategic cross sections of interior female parts and no mention whatsoever of male anatomy. A bonus is the spread about aging, which features images of adults and facts about skin and bone changes-a topic not often addressed in works for this age group. -VERDICT An imperfect but enlightening overview of body systems for a wide audience.
