Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up-What could be more fun than 93 dessert recipes that not only are tasty and easy to make but also allow room for creativity and flair and use inexpensive and readily available ingredients? (The base step for all entries is the Rice Krispies treats recipe.) Tinted with food coloring and shaped into sculptures of everyday objects, ordinary Rice Krispies treats take on wild transformations, from an avocado to a football field to a zebra. The tone is folksy and encouraging, and the organization is spot-on. The strongest feature of the work is the photo series for each recipe, captioned with helpful reminders. There are references to Instagram and other websites for stencils to use for the more intricate designs. In deciding whether to purchase this book, librarians may want to ask whether readers could obtain the same ideas and materials from the websites listed or even from Pinterest; however, the strength of this volume is its variety of themes and nuanced suggestions of ingredients and techniques. While cooks experienced with cake decorating and other edible art might not learn a lot, novices will gain much expertise. VERDICT A great pick for libraries with a wide range of cookbook resources, this would also make an eye-catching addition to a DIY display or collection.-Amy Thurow, Rome Corners Intermediate School, Oregon, WI © Copyright 2017.
