Abbey Sy

Book - 2017

Make your ABCs more FUN with Hand Lettering A to Z. Along with the popularity of journaling, paper crafting, book crafting, and making personalized gifts and cards, comes a renewed appreciation for hand lettering. Hand Lettering A to Z is a fun, hands-on, write-in book, in which artist and calligrapher Abbey Sy presents her creative lettering and invites artists from several countries to contribute alphabets of their own designs: all unique, all hand drawn, many ready to be colored with pen or watercolor. Each alphabet will be paired with a collection of phrases: (Let it Snow, Let's Dance, It's Only Rock and Roll, Just Do It!) to show readers different ways to use the lettering and to have fun with an international variety of ways... to turn the phrase. The artists will make their selections from a list of fifteen languages (Danish, Dutch, English, Finish, French, German, Icelandic, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish). Readers can use the phrases when making cards, gifts, Valentines, or embellishing their journals. Using the phrases in other languages adds to the fun of creating something special. The book is printed on artists' quality paper, with plenty of space opposite each collection of letters and phrases for the reader to draw, copy, and practice.

Review by Booklist Review

The skill and art of hand lettering have been popular for many years and are having a resurgence as part of the trend valuing artisanal, one-of-a-kind creations. With the current cultural focus on self-expression and individualism, even something as routine as writing can be a manifestation of one's creativity and a demonstration of one's unique perspective. This book strives to empower anyone, regardless of formal artistic training, to master hand lettering. Suitably, images of such lettering are included throughout as fonts and type styles are explained, tips for utilizing different media are enumerated, and techniques for a variety of forms are illustrated. The instructional text is all in English, but examples of lettering are in a variety of languages that use the Latin alphabet, including French, Spanish, Swedish, German, Portuguese, and more (English translations are provided below the images). With its emphasis on creating from the heart, this book has a desirable balance of instructional information alongside ample room to let one's creativity flow.--Heidemann, Anne Copyright 2017 Booklist
