Tokyo geek's guide Manga, anime, gaming, cosplay, toys, idols & more

Gianni Simone

Book - 2017

Tokyo is ground zero for Japan's popular "geek" or otaku culture, a phenomenon that has now swept across the globe. This is the most comprehensive guide to Tokyo's geeky underworld ever produced. It provides a comprehensive run-down on each major Tokyo district where geeks congregate, shop, play and hang out from hi-tech Akihabara and trendy Harajuku to newer and lesser-known haunts like chic Shimo-Kita and working-class Ikebukuro. Dozens of iconic shops, restaurants, cafes and clubs in each area are described in loving detail with precise directions to get to each location. Maps, URLs, opening hours and over 400 fascinating color photographs bring you around Tokyo on an unforgettable trip to the centers of Japanese mang...a, anime and geek culture. Interviews with local otaku experts and people on the street let you see the world from their perspective and provide insights on what is currently happening in Tokyo now (which will eventually impact the rest of the world)!

Review by Library Journal Review

Simone covers everything about otaku (geek) life, including informing readers that the term was once negatively interpreted as someone obsessed with anime or manga. However, as manga and anime have grown in popularity over the last 30 years, the disparaging connotations have disappeared. Tokyo, geek capital of the world, abounds with neighborhoods that are rich with shops, restaurants, nightlife, hotels, events, museums/libraries, and festivals. Maps clarify locations in the overwhelming city and each area's "specialties" are noted. Stores sell clothing, wigs, and even contact lenses that enable fans to dress like their favorite characters. Some restaurants decorate food to fit a theme, about which the author notes, "the clever presentation often outshines the food itself." For a fee, you can enjoy manga of any kind and hundreds of picture books at Tachikawa Manga Park Library, while the Suginami Animation Museum offers a historical overview of Japanese animation. Mind-boggling pictures are included; travel tips remind readers that hours change and establishments come and go quickly. Hentai (pornography) is part of otaku culture, "so you have been warned." VERDICT This fascinating book, especially the pictures, is unlike most travel books.-Susan G. Baird, -formerly with Oak Lawn P.L., IL © Copyright 2017.
