Review by Booklist Review

Basher Science is renowned for its unique approach to discussing STEM topics, and this latest book on engineering celebrates how science can be put into action. Content is broken down into succinct individual concepts, with two pages devoted to each. Each concept is represented by an anime-style cartoon with anthropomorphic characteristics related to the narrative explanation. These cartoons are then grouped to demonstrate their relationships to one another. Even more unorthodox, each concept's explanation is written from a first-person perspective, painting a persona for its most important properties. Thematic chapters build from basic physics principles to tools and strategies used by engineers. The last two chapters include groups of some of engineering's greatest products, such as architectural structures, modes of transportation, and technological devices. Color-coded tabs and text make navigating the book easy, and its aesthetic appeal is undeniable. The innovative way that Basher Science introduces STEM topics is a perfect approach for middle-level readers.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2017 Booklist

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

This addition to the long-running Basher Science series introduces concepts in engineering, visually represented by chunky, anime-style figures. Divided into seven color-coded categories, the book introduces members of the "Mechanical Mob" (which include Ramp, Lever, and Pump), "Design Dynamos" such as Ergonomics and Artificial Intelligence ("I'm still relatively young, and my first real job is to suggest products and ads you might like on the Internet"), and dozens of other tangible and intangible concepts, structures, and devices. The upbeat, first-person narratives and quirky art create an inviting way for children to learn about the breadth of what engineering can mean. Ages 10-14. (Jan.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
