Forgotten Bible stories

Margaret McAllister

Book - 2016

An elegantly illustrated collection of thirteen lesser-known Bible stories. Margaret McAllister imaginatively retells these tales of often-forgotten people, specially chosen for their care and compassion towards the vulnerable, and their (sometimes unexpected) strength of character.

Review by Booklist Review

Everyone knows the stories of Adam and Eve and David and Goliath; McAllister looks closer and finds lesser-known tales to share. Among the intriguing characters introduced are a donkey who sees an angel; Dorcas, who was raised from death (or near death) by Peter; and a Roman centurion who received a miracle from Jesus. Most of the stories are told in first person, which gives them an immediacy. Sometimes, the stories are simplified to the point where they may be confusing; for instance, the experiences of Hagar, Sarah's maid who bore Abraham a son, Ishmael. But the striking, evocative illustrations both full-page and smaller pieces of art catch the eye and extend the stories. This book will be of most interest to children who are already familiar with Bible stories, especially those who want to go beyond the familiar.--Cooper, Ilene Copyright 2017 Booklist
