Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-6-Paired with a mix of illustrative styles, Holland's rich descriptions of mythical beasts leap from the page to intrigue and terrify readers. The author combines a passion for the fantastical with skill and expertise. Each detailed spread introduces a creature from a cross section of world mythology. Beautiful mermaids, gentle unicorns, and mischievous elves appear in stark contrast to the likes of Cerberus, gatekeeper to the underworld. Vivid color and die-cut pages add further interest. Though the vocabulary is challenging, a glossary is included. However, a pronunciation guide is not. Tidbits of history, geography, and early belief systems enrich the feast of images. Tips and tricks for survival will leave the bravest of readers wondering if they could outwit a werewolf or withstand a greedy griffin's attack. VERDICT Young mythology enthusiasts who are not quite ready for the likes of Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson" series will enjoy this introductory collection to all things fantasy.-Jane Miller, Nashville Public Library © Copyright 2016.
