Book - 2017

The 2015 drought in California continually made national news, but its not the only place thats battled a lack of water in recent years. Droughts disrupt the water cycle, crop production, and the everyday lives of people and animals living in the region. Can they be prevented? Readers are introduced to why droughts happen and how theyre dealt with when they do. An emphasis on conservation and drought-prone regions around the world encourages readers to think about this topic with a global view. Full-color photographs illustrate the devastation droughts can cause, and fascinating fact boxes complement the main content with even more science and social studies information. --Amazon.com

Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-6-This series offers wide-ranging coverage of water-related topics. Oceans and Droughts are standout choices. Castellano incorporates plenty of maps in his explanations of the political, geographic, and geologic aspects of the five oceans that form one world ocean. Also, a helpful chart compares surface area, average depth, and deepest points. Dramatic photos accompany Rajczak's explanations of meteorological, agricultural, hydrological, and socioeconomic droughts. Conservation and Wastewater would pair well for lessons on how public water systems work and the need to reduce pollution and curb water usage to assure fresh water availability. Although adequate presentations, Precipitation and Water Cycle don't differ from existing coverage of these popular topics. A drawback to all the volumes are the "Facts on Tap" sidebars that include useful information but are hard to read due to the use of wavy blue type on blue backgrounds. VERDICT Most collections would benefit from adding at least some titles as noted above, even if budgets don't stretch to purchase the entire series. © Copyright 2016.
