Review by Booklist Review

Few would choose to be bitten by a dog, even when fitted with the appropriate armor. Yet that's the choice Rose makes, enduring numerous attacks, all in the name of researching police-dog work. Rose, the current Poet Laureate of Vancouver, spends time with police and their dogs in her native Canada, in Iowa and Washington, and abroad in England and France. Each country has its own approach and training methods, and the way that programs are funded varies widely, but all canine police share common values: unshakable commitment to their programs and a deep, abiding bond with their dogs. These police are overwhelmingly white and male, and most police dogs are also male, but things are beginning to change in both areas. It can take years, sometimes more than a decade, to be accepted into a canine training program, and training is rigorous and long, but it pays off when criminals would rather give up than be bitten. This book gives a comprehensive glimpse into an overlooked line of police work.--Curbow, Joan Copyright 2017 Booklist
