Review by Choice Review

Created primarily for the general naturalist and firefly enthusiast, this interesting and well-written book provides a wealth of fundamental information on the natural history of this intriguing group of beetles. A strong conservation theme runs through the text. The book is beautifully illustrated, with over 600 full-color photographs depicting a wide range of species and firefly habitats. Scientific jargon is kept to a minimum, and material presented is highly accessible to general readers; a glossary of terms is provided for readers not familiar with select entomology concepts. Species-specific accounts (generally four to six pages in length) are provided for 49 species. These include several illustrative photographs and information on general appearance/field identification, flashing behavior, activity patterns, habitat, range, similar species, research studies, and other aspects of natural history. Details of species-specific male flashing patterns during courtship flights, including a large foldout chart of 62 species, provide useful information for field identification. Most children have a fascination with fireflies--capturing and observing these insects is a common childhood activity on summer evenings. The author builds on this deeply ingrained fascination and does an excellent job rekindling childhood interests in these creatures. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; general readers. --Danny A. Brass, independent scholar
