This source (the first in Nolo Press' Desk Reference series) contains about 320 A-Z entries that review contract terms and concepts. Examples include Ambiguity, Bill of sale, Disclaimers, Fax signatures, Handwritten changes, Liquidated damages, Prenuptial agreement, and Shall (versus will). Although there are a few one-sentence entries (e.g., Attest, Redemption), many stretch over several pages (e.g., Best efforts, two pages; Illegal contract, three and one-half pages; Product liability, four pages). The text reviews key issues, is easy to understand, and includes frequent injections of humor a style well suited for the layperson seeking practical advice. At the end of most listings, Stim, attorney and author of several Nolo publications, including Music Law (1999) and Patent, Copyright, and Trademark (2009), points readers to related terms. The author provides numerous examples of sample language. For instance, the entry Grant includes Grant of Rights sample language. In addition, the volume contains several examples of popular forms, such as Evaluation Agreement, Merchandise License Agreement, and Partnership Agreement. Those looking only for forms might turn to Legal Forms for Starting & Running a Small Business (2010), also from Nolo. The alphabetically arranged format combined with a selection of forms and sample language makes Contracts unique. This resource should assist all parties participating in a contract. Useful for public and academic libraries.--Fadel, Stephen Copyright 2010 Booklist

From acts of God to promissory notes to yellow-dog contracts, attorney Stim (Patent, Copyright & Trademark) helps laypeople navigate the sometimes murky waters of contractual agreements. Stim dedicates sections to writing different types of contracts, a dictionary of terms found in contracts and similar legal documents, and how to enforce these agreements once they're made. The bulk of the book is an alphabetized list of terms related to legal words and concepts. There is also a well-thought-out section on statutes of limitations on contract claims by state as well as contract sample documents scattered throughout. Stim provides ample information on the validity of online contracts, including e-contracts and e-signatures. A similar work is Richard D. Harroch's Business Contracts Kit for Dummies. VERDICT Entrepreneurs and small-business owners will find this handy when dealing with contractual issues.-Poppy Johnson-Renvall, Mesalands Community Coll. Lib., Tucumcari, NM (c) Copyright 2010.
