Secrets of the Tulip Sisters

Susan Mallery

Book - 2017

Kelly Murphy's life as a tulip farmer is pretty routine - up at dawn, off to work, lather, rinse, repeat. But everything changes one sun-washed summer with two dramatic homecomings: Griffith Burnett - Tulpen Crossing's prodigal son, who's set his sights on Kelly - and Olivia, her beautiful, wayward and, as far as Kelly is concerned, unwelcome sister. Tempted by Griffith, annoyed by Olivia, Kelly is overwhelmed by the secrets that were so easy to keep when she was alone. But Olivia's return isn't as triumphant as she pretends. Her job has no future, and ever since her dad sent her away from the bad boy she loved, she has felt cut off from her past. She's determined to reclaim her man and her place in the family...... whether her sister likes it or not. For ten years, she and Kelly have been strangers. Olivia will get by without her approval now. While Kelly and Olivia butt heads, their secrets tumble out in a big hot mess, revealing some truths that will change everything they thought they knew. Can they forgive each other - and themselves - and redefine what it means to be sisters?

Kelly Murphy is satisfied with her life in the small town of Tulpen Crossing, Washington. Her job running her family's tulip farm leaves her with little time for romance, so when handsome Griffith Burnett approaches her with a proposition a no-strings-attached but monogamous fling she decides to go for it. But a surprise visit from her estranged and glamorous sister, Olivia, upends her summer plans. Olivia, who has spent the last several years working for her petty, narcissistic mother, Marilee, needs a break, and visiting family in Tulpen Crossing (and reigniting her relationship with her high-school sweetheart) could be the remedy. Despite their differences, the sisters soon realize that they complement one another, but long-held family secrets threaten to keep them apart. When Marilee unexpectedly shows up, the sisters are forced to confront their past and move beyond the grief they felt when Marilee walked on on the family. Mallery blends the friend-and-family relationships and self-actualization focus common to women's fiction with the racy love scenes and happy ending of a contemporary romance, making this an excellent summer read for fans of both genres.--Donohue, Nanette Copyright 2017 Booklist

Kelly Murphy and her father, Jeff, own a nationally recognized tulip farm in Tulpen Crossing, WA. Their routine is thrown for a loop when younger daughter Olivia decides to come back for the summer. Though Olivia and Jeff have been in touch, it's been nearly 11 years since Olivia was sent away to boarding school. It seemed the right thing to do at the time, as their mother, Marilee, had picked up and left two years earlier, but Kelly feels responsible for both events. Meanwhile, Kelly's old high school crush Griffith Burnett wants to begin a secure and lasting relationship with her that will definitely not lead to love or marriage. Olivia, who keeps her own secrets, takes up inadvertently with Kelly's ex-boyfriend, and Kelly's best friend Helen pines for Jeff, despite their 16-year age difference. If things weren't complicated enough, Marilee shows up on their doorstep. Verdict Mallery (Daughters of the Bride) adds lots of tulip growing detail and business acumen to this charming tale of love unrequited (maybe), love ignited, and wild sex with naked cooking. The men here are pretty awesome, while the gals have a lot to learn about facing the truth. For romance fans and admirers of fresh women's fiction.-Bette-Lee Fox, Library Journal © Copyright 2017. A tulip-centered town is the backdrop for three women finding themselves and falling in love.Kelly and Olivia Murphy may be sisters, but they've never had much in common. When their mother left their family and Olivia was sent away to boarding school, the divide between them grew. Now, Kelly works for the family tulip farm in Tulpen Crossing, Washington, and lives with their dad, Jeff, while Olivia works for their mother's real estate company in Phoenix. But when Olivia decides to come back home to reconnect with an old boyfriend, the sisters are forced to get to know each other as adults. Olivia quickly finds out that her old boyfriend isn't as great as she thought, so she starts a fling with another local guy, Svenwithout knowing that Sven is Kelly's ex. Meanwhile, Kelly enters into a relationship with Griffith, a guy she adored back in high schooluntil he broke her heart. And Kelly's best friend, Helen, is secretly pining after the guy of her dreamswho just happens to be Kelly and Olivia's dad. When their mother comes back to town, her presence threatens Kelly and Olivia's tentative friendship as well as Helen and Jeff's burgeoning romance. Once everyone's secrets are out in the open, will their relationships survive? Mallery (A Million Little Things, 2017, etc.) creates a cute and charming world in Tulpen Crossing, and her three main characters are immensely likable and sympathetic. Although Kelly's and Helen's romantic plotlines are much stronger than Olivia's, it's Olivia's search for a sense of belonging that really drives the story. Romance blossoms in a sweet small-town setting. Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
