Review by Booklist Reviews

This approachable, well-illustrated, thorough guide to shade planting would be even more valuable to a gardening collection were its subgenre not already represented by other good titles, like Larry Hodgson's Making the Most of Shade (2005). That said, Glorious Shade is filled with excellent advice, from its seasonal to-do calendar to soil amending to overall plant selection to the numerous colorized breakout lists, which include fragrant shade plants, native plants, plants for acidic soils, and plants for neutral to alkaline soils. Nearly half of the book is a listing of plants arranged under Trees and Shrubs, Ferns, Herbaceous Perennials, and Tropicals and Annuals. Each entry, alphabetized under species name, provides the plant's generic name, its light and soil requirements, its hardiness zones, height and width at maturity, and an author's comment, often helpfully personalized from her own work with that plant. Especially recommended for collections lacking shade-gardening titles. Copyright 2017 Booklist Reviews.

For gardeners, shade can often serve as a less-than-ideal scenario. In Glorious Shade, Carey, an educator, historian, gardener, and the senior director at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Meadowbrook Farm, illustrates how one can work with shade in his or her garden. The author presents "Shades of Shade," a chapter which highlights the various types of shade. From there, Carey explains seasonal shade and how to change the shade level (without chopping down trees). This is before the author provides individual reviews and planting options for 69 trees, 8 vines, 124 perennials, and 31 annuals. Carey has produced an "introduction to botany" textbook disguised as a colorful (398 photographs) gardening guide. The text delves into a wide variety of topics, such as mycorrhizae, allelopathy, soil science, and landscape architecture. As much as Glorious Shade strives to help the amateur gardener, the text is also a professional botanist's primer on how to talk about plants to a lay audience and have them listen.
