This volume in the Transgender Life series offers a useful and accessible introduction to the complexities of what it means to be transgender. Though brief, the material addresses physical and body issues, transness, orientation, relationships, the trans community, being trans at school, and inevitably, transphobia, cissexism, and trans resistance. While part of the information presented may be familiar to some, there are surprises as well. Example: the Intersex Society of North America estimates that approximately 1 in 100 people are intersex. Woods, a trans woman, brings personal expertise and experience to the material and puts a human face on the issues addressed, incorporating photographs of transgender and gender-nonconforming young people. Proper nomenclature, always a complex and sometimes baffling issue, is addressed in sidebar features and a glossary.--Cart, Michael Copyright 2017 Booklist
