Clara Perry's life is crumbling underneath her feet. Her best friend committed suicide, her husband is cheating on her, and she is pretty sure she is wanted for manslaughter. Clara is a devoted and dedicated midwife, but one of her patients tragically and inexplicably passed away during a home birth. Instead of waiting to be investigated, Clara withdraws thousands of dollars, steals another woman's ID, and crosses into Canada on the back of a snowmobile. After renting a cabin on the frozen shores of Seagull Island, Clara restarts her life as Sara Livingston. As she gets to know the island's residents, and her heart begins to heal, she realizes it might not be possible to leave everything behind. In the vein of Where'd You Go, Bernadette (2012) by Maria Semple and Falling Uphill (2012) by Wendy Nelson Tokunaga, Harman uses Clara's impulsive journey to explore the power of forgiveness. She draws on her experience as a midwife to add true-to-life detail to Clara's adventure, grounding the high-stakes story. Full of hope and heart, this will appeal to anyone tempted by the thought of complete reinvention.--Turza, Stephanie Copyright 2016 Booklist

Clara Perry, a nurse-midwife, is on the run from her life, which has been slowly falling apart. Her husband is cheating on her, her daughter is living halfway around the globe, and her best friend has committed suicide. When a patient dies in childbirth, Clara decides that she can no longer live her life in West Virginia. She becomes a fugitive and enters Canada illegally to start a new life, with a stolen identity, on tiny remote Seagull Island on Lake Erie. There she becomes Sara Livingston, a former nurse who is seeking the solitude to write a novel. Slowly, she is drawn out by the inhabitants of her new home and into small-town life. As her year on the run comes full circle and her secrets come to light, "Sara" learns who she really is. Verdict Harman's (The Midwife of Hope River) experience as a midwife shines thorough in the details in this quiet novel about a woman rediscovering her true self. Fans of Maria Semple's Where'd You Go Bernadette will enjoy this story of a woman's courageous reinvention.-Catherine Coyne, Mansfield P.L., MA © Copyright 2016.
