Japanese quilt and fabric designer Matsuyama's cheery mix-and-match style is on trend, making this an ideal time for an English-language release of her 2009 book of patchwork projects featuring hand embroidery and hand appliqué. Reproduction fabrics from the 1930s, many designed by Matsuyama, are highlighted, as are fruit and floral motifs, and the palette features plenty of bright, bold color. Beginners can try out the techniques via one of the smaller projects, such as a pincushion; experienced quilters can tackle the cover quilt, which features 50 different blocks. Hand appliqué and hand-piecing directions are provided, as are templates for both the patchwork and -appliqué elements.
