Though it might baffle adults, Minecraft has taken over video game consoles, and this new offering will help bridge the knowledge gap. Starting out with an introduction to game play, common terms, and what kids are learning by playing, the book moves into themed quests, which are further broken down into labs. The labs are step-by-step instructions of activities and include in-game screenshots and additional steps to make the challenges more difficult. (Librarians should note that stickers are included in the back to mark when a lab has been completed.) The greatest strength of this volume is that Miller and Scott have found a way to combine skills in Minecraft with real-life experiences. Before learning how to build a flying machine in the game, for example, readers learn how to construct paper airplanes away from the screen. Family interaction is highly encouraged, although this could easily work as a library program or classroom lesson. Fans of the game will be pleased by the new skills acquired, while adults will appreciate the insight into kids' latest obsession.--Linsenmeyer, Erin Copyright 2016 Booklist
