Gr 9 Up-The tagline of this film is "The Inside Story of Obama's Presidency and America's Deepening Polarization." Included are in-depth interviews with New York Times journalist Robert Draper, Wesley Lowry of the Washington Post, former U.S. Representative Eric Cantor, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates, and others who analyze President Obama and the current political environment. The program offers a comprehensive look into the politics behind Obama's rise to power and the election of President Donald Trump. The film details the bargaining that went on behind the scenes as various bills were passed, and the close relationship the president must forge with the House and Senate. There is extensive analysis of the rise of the Tea Party and the historic election of 2012. The first part chronicles the shutdown of Washington, DC, and the economic bailout. Other emotional events examined are the death of Trayvon Martin and the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Journalists discuss the historic events, presenting an even portrayal of both Republican and Democratic issues. The program gives viewers a lot to digest and may spark conversation. It's comprehensive but might be difficult to follow for students without background knowledge of politics. It's best viewed in small doses with relevant teaching points made before and after each selection. VERDICT A thorough analysis of the Obama presidency for political science students.
