Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-5-A jam-packed, informative title on ancient Greek myths. Yasuda isn't just retelling the old familiar tales. Instead, she has placed the myths in context so that each chapter is a different exploration of ancient Greek life and culture. The actual stories, like that of King Midas, are confined to a small sidebar within the "Monsters and Mayhem" chapter. Each section ends with one or more projects (many STEM related, like one that has readers experiment with levers) that revisit some part of the text. Most are accessible and don't require adult supervision. Two, however, are more complicated: making a papier-mâché votive and baking cookies in the shape of the Greek isles. The illustrations are cartoonlike, befitting the airy and colorful design. Throughout the pages, highlighted words (in blue) are defined. VERDICT An additional purchase for libraries, but useful for classrooms studying ancient Greek history and mythology.-Marie Drucker, Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library, NY © Copyright 2016.
