Review by Horn Book Review
Three picture books by the inimitable William Steig are back in print. Roland (rev. 8/68), the first of Steigs books for children, is about a medieval wandering-minstrel pig who almost gets roasted by a fox. Zabajaba is a present-tense tale of a boys exploration of a fantastical jungle complete with a petrified monster and a giant bottle containing his parents. In The Toy Brother (rev. 5/96), young Charless know-it-all big brother Yorick shrinks himself, alas, in their fathers lab. In all three cases, Steigs signature cartoonish illustrations and generally jolly texts make it clear that though these stories involve danger, theyre set in a playful world. shoshana flax (c) Copyright 2016.
