Review by Library Journal Review

Based on novels by Caroline Graham, Midsomer Murders has been a TV staple since 1997. The cases center on the imaginary rural English county of Midsomer, where its peculiar inhabitants live in quaint villages and often commit murder. John Nettles had the starring role of Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Tom Barnaby for the first 81 episodes. Neil Dudgeon took over from Nettles, playing DCI John Barnaby (a cousin). The cases in this set deal with winemaking, a folk festival, a magician, and a lost manuscript. Events quickly move to murder, often with multiple likely suspects, all having hidden motives. Barnaby's home life revolves around his wife, a newborn daughter, and his dog Sykes. Much of the charm comes from the main characters living quite mundane lives when not confronting homicide. VERDICT The comfort of a good mystery with minimal gore is what keeps Midsomer Murders highly recommended viewing for mystery fans everywhere.-Lawrence Maxted, Gannon Univ.
