Akira Yoshizawa, Japan's greatest origami master Featuring over 60 models and 1000 diagrams by the master

Akira Yoshizawa, 1911-2005

Book - 2016

This is the first comprehensive survey of the extraordinary work of Akira Yoshizawa, who is widely acknowledged to be the father of modern origami. This book presents Yoshizawa's own collection of over 60 models folded by the master himself along with instructional drawings and texts from his private collectionumost of them published here for the very first time. Yoshizawa was an avid innovator who played a seminal role in the "rebirth" of origami in the modern world. He served as a bridge between past and presentbetween the ancient traditional craft and the development of origami as a modern practiceboth in terms of inventing new techniques and in preserving the traditional Japanese forms of origami. Above all, he elevated o...rigami to the status of a true art. It is largely due to his work that origami today is practiced in every country of the world and has a huge international following. Photographs of the models were taken expressly for the book by Kazuo Hamada, a leading Japanese art photographer.

The late Yoshizawa (1911-2005) is known as a pioneer of origami who brought the traditional Japanese paper-folding technique to a wide international audience. This retrospective presents a cross-section of Yoshizawa's works, drawn primarily from two of his books-Beautiful Origami and Easy Origami-as well as essays celebrating the artist's mastery of the form. Many of his designs are drawn from the culture, flora, and fauna of his native Japan, and feature both minimal and detailed representations of all kinds of birds, animals, people, and objects. Step-by-step folding diagrams are included for each of the pieces; beginners will want to start with the second group of projects. VERDICT Paper artists interested in reproducing masterworks of origami and learning techniques from an expert will be drawn to this lovely retrospective. © Copyright 2016.
