Review by Library Journal Review

Despite its focus on crayons, mixed-media artist Bell's guide is strictly for grown-ups. This simple, nonmessy medium is highly versatile: there is a range of types and quality levels of crayons available, from the familiar Crayola to professional-grade wax pastels. Crayons can also be used for more than coloring. Chapters cover drawing, mixed media, wax-resistant techniques, and three-dimensional work. Many examples and step-by-step projects demonstrate how surprisingly painterly drawings made with crayons can be; the myriad ways crayons combine with paint, ink, collage, and other media; and how to melt crayons in batik wax resist processes. Three-dimensional sections cover miniature sculptures carved from crayons as well as much larger installation artworks. VERDICT Novelty-seeking adult readers of every artistic skill level will appreciate this guide. © Copyright 2016. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
