This sequel to Gilman's Silver on the Road (2015) follows Isobel (aka Lacoto Tavora), the Devil's Left Hand, and her mentor, Gabriel Kasun (aka Two Voices), across the Territory. The time frame is Jefferson's presidency, but it is an alternate reality where magic is a part of life. Isobel and Gabriel follow anomalies, which begin with a desecrated valley of massacred buffalo. The earth reacts, leading Isobel and Gabriel to search for the reasons for the massacre and the anomalies. The Territory is separated from America by the Mississippi River, and most of the people Isobel and Gabriel meet are native. Gabriel can sense water. Spirits of the land connect with Isobel, leading her and Gabriel into danger. They take turns leading on the journey, and it is easy to forget that Isobel is only 16 years old. They eventually find the reasons for the massacre and the anomalies, and they find out that Isobel can do things neither of them knew she could do. Although this book can be read alone, it wouldn't be a bad idea to read Silver on the Road first. Copyright 2016 Booklist Reviews.
Review by Library Journal ReviewsIn Nebula nominee Gilman's sequel to Silver on the Road, Isobel journeys through the Territory, serving as the Left Hand of a man called the Devil, who protects residents of that waywardly magical place. Alas, she and mentor Gabriel learn that something is killing the Territory's livestock and compromising its magic.. Copyright 2016 Library Journal.
Review by Library Journal ReviewsAs the Devil's Left Hand, Isobel serves as his eyes and ears across the land. Wandering the western edges of his territory, she is called to a place where everything has gone wrong: dead buffalo stripped of their hides; an area that is unsettled, literally. With her mentor Gabriel, Isobel investigates the cause of these natural disasters. They soon uncover a growing danger that threatens the entire region. Adding to their problems is an encounter with explorers sent by the U.S. president. It will take all of the knowledge and magical power at Isobel's disposal to keep herself and Gabriel safe—along with the rest of the territory. VERDICT Gilman's sequel to Silver on the Road continues a fabulous coming-of-age tale of magic and power, set in a conflict-ridden alternative Wild West so vividly evoked that readers will be saddling up to ride along. Review by Publishers Weekly ReviewsIn the second installment of the Devil's West historical fantasy series (after 2015's Silver on the Road), 16-year-old Isobel continues to travel the roads west of the Mississippi, acting as the devil's Left Hand: "the cold eye and quick knife, the final decision-maker in the isolated expanses of the Territory when the devil himself could not be." Along with her mentor, Gabriel, Isobel sets out to discover what's been poisoning the land, causing earthquakes, and driving away the inhabitants. She finds an ancient spirit, wounded and trapped by power-hungry magicians, as well as an exploratory mission sent by President Jefferson of the United States. Isobel and Gabriel must find a way to solve the interlocking problems, even as she learns more about what her role as Left Hand truly entails. Gilman crafts a fascinating vision of a magic-infested continent, set in an unsettled and unpredictable time. As she expands upon the imminent conflict among the various factions inhabiting North America and delves into the supernatural structure of the setting, she lays the groundwork for her increasingly capable heroine to come into her own.
