Battling orcs and evil wizards on an empty stomach is a lot to ask, and Monro-Cassel (A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook) is here to help World of Warcraft adventurers fuel up before or after an epic battle or lengthy campaign. Over 75 dishes are included, all inspired by the massively popular game. Some are simply themselves (candied sweet potatoes, crab cakes, skewered peanut chicken, and cheddar-beer dip), but the majority are retitled classics, including Crispy Bat Wings (chicken wings), Dragonbreath Chili, and Conjured Mana Buns (caramel rolls). Travelers and gamers alike will appreciate Tracker Snacks (candied bacon), spiced beef jerky, and crusty flatbread. Each recipe is imaginatively introduced (Crispy Bat Wings, for example, are "an Undercity snack [that] is a favorite among the Horde") and offers pairings and skill level estimates (though pastry dough may be a little beyond the reach of those at Apprentice level). Artfully assembled, and written with gamers in mind, this volume manages to transcend novelty. It's a thoughtful, fun and practical collection for gamers and cooks of all types.
