A darkness absolute

Kelley Armstrong

Book - 2017

"When experienced homicide detective Casey Duncan first moved to the secret town of Rockton, she expected a safe haven for people like her, people running from their past misdeeds and past lives. She knew living in Rockton meant living off-the-grid completely: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval. What she didn't expect is that Rockton comes with its own set of secrets and dangers. Now, in A Darkness Absolute, Casey and her fellow Rockton sheriff's deputy Will chase a cabin-fevered resident into the woods, where they are stranded in a blizzard. Taking shelter in a cave, they discover a former resident who's been held captiv...e for over a year. When the bodies of two other women turn up, Casey and her colleagues must find out if it's an outsider behind the killings or if the answer is more complicated than that ... before another victim goes missing. Casey Duncan returns in another heart-racing thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong"--

Casey Duncan is back in Armstrong's follow-up to City of the Lost (2016), warming up to her role as detective in the hidden town of Rockton a sanctuary for those who never want to be found and warming up to Sheriff Eric Dalton. Duncan and her partner, Will Anders, are pursuing a suspect into the snowy woods surrounding Rockton when they discover a woman long presumed dead. She's been kept prisoner for more than a year in a secluded cave, and has few details about her captor. Duncan, Anders, and Dalton set out to solve one mystery and stumble on a few more, revealing fascinating details about the residents of Rockton. Armstrong, typically known for her urban-fantasy work, has crafted a solid thriller in this latest series, and fans of Karin Slaughter and Kathy Reichs will enjoy the headstrong and tough Casey Duncan.--Ciesla, Carolyn Copyright 2017 Booklist

In Armstrong's gripping follow-up to 2016's City of the Lost, Det. Casey Duncan and Deputy Will Anders find themselves stranded during a snow storm while trying to track down a cabin-fever stricken member of Rockton, an isolated, off-the-grid town deep in the Canadian Yukon. Forced to shelter overnight in a cave, Duncan and Anders make a horrific discovery-a woman thought killed has instead been held captive in a pit for more than a year. Further exploration of the cave system leads them to discover the bodies of two women, with signs pointing to the same perpetrator. Duncan and Sheriff Dalton have reason to believe that this time the threat comes from outside the borders of Rockton, which serves its residents as a haven. But the investigators can't escape the fact that members of their own tiny community have dark-and potentially dangerous-secrets hidden in their pasts. The unusual setup and isolated location increase tension in a fast-paced entry that will keep readers guessing. Agent: Helen Heller, Helen Heller Agency (Canada). (Feb.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. Living off the grid in the isolated Canadian town of Rockton appealed to former homicide cop Casey Duncan; like so many of the other residents, she's trying to shake unpleasant memories from the past (City of the Lost). She's even struck up the beginnings of a relationship with prickly Sheriff Eric Dalton. While he is off on a supply run-Rockton isn't the sort of place with a supermarket-Casey and Deputy Will -Anderson pursue a Rockton local hell-bent on running deep into the woods and straight into a blizzard. Casey and Will take shelter from the storm in a cave, only to make a gruesome discovery: a woman presumed dead for nearly a year has been kept prisoner there by a mystery man, who could be out hunting more girls if Casey and Will can't catch him before he goes to ground. VERDICT Armstrong gives her cop-with-baggage backstory a twist, making Casey a singularly skilled but humanely flawed protagonist, adrift in a quirky utopia that's as dangerous as any big city.
